2 Kids Seriously Injure a Woman After Throwing a Shopping Cart

Have you heard about this story? Two 12 year old boys threw a shopping cart over the 4th floor of a mall. The cart hit a New York mother, Marion Hedges, who is now in the hospital for head injuries. Of course, this was all unintentional.
The good news is that the mother of two will survive; however, due to her sustained brain injuries, her recovery will be a slow one. As for the pre-teen boys, CBS News says:
The 12-year-old boys have been charged with felony assault and misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon.
With this incident occurring so close to the boy who pulled a gun out after a lady jokingly said she’d steal his Halloween candy, many people are deeply concerned with the quality of parenting today. They should be. We should be.
Websites are flooded with comments blaming the parents of the 2 boys for this tragic incident. But does all the finger-pointing and expressions of anger bring us closer to solving the problem?
NO.
What’s the solution?
Kids require constant guidance. They need to understand that actions have consequences. They gain this valuable life lesson, along with others, through their parents.
But what happens if their moms and dads have to work 2 jobs to support the family? Many single and dual-parent households struggle to make ends meet. These folks just can’t put in the time to parent because of financial reasons.
How should this be handled then? These households need to seek support. Support can come from other relatives, friends, day care centers or even the government. There has to be some system in place to provide assistance to kids who need authority figures in their lives. This is where non-profit organizations, the private sector and the government can swoop in to (hopefully) save the day.
The true challenge here is figuring out how to provide what our children need, not just as a family but as a society and nation.
