On Bullying: Bullies and Those Who are Bullied

From the archive. This post was first published on the original Green Eggs and Moms blog and is kept here as it was.

Do you know how to tell if your child is being bullied?

Keeping kids safe on the playground during recess is more than just preventing falls or injuries.

A huge part of keeping them safe is…

…preventing them from bullying and from being bullied.

Bullying leads to violent behavior later in life, and it has a long-term impact on the victims.

That is why it is crucial to identify and stop playground bullying.

Listed below is information to help you understand the profile of both bullies and those who are bullied.

There are three types of bullying.

1. Verbal. This exhibits itself as name-calling, spreading rumors, teasing, mocking, or even sarcastic comments.

2. Emotional. This type of bullying can be in the form of social alienation by excluding someone from a group or spreading lies and rumors. The behavior is aimed at hurting a victim on an emotional level by humiliating them.

3. Physical. This is the most obvious form of bullying, which can be done by pinching, tripping, pushing, spitting, or any other form of physical violence by one child against another.

Boys tend to bully in a physical way, while girls typically exhibit emotional or verbal bullying.

What type of child will likely become a bully?

Those who…

  • Lack empathy and compassion for others
  • Do not feel guilty
  • Believe that others but himself instigate attacks
  • Like to be in charge and boss other children around
  • Are aggressive and demand attention
  • Believe they should get anything they want and always win
  • Are intolerant of differences such as abilities, gender, religion, etc.

What type of child is likely to be bullied?

A child who…

  • Is isolated and alone on the playground or throughout the school day
  • Is insecure, anxious, or has trouble developing friendships
  • Is weak or small and unable to adequately defend himself

What are the signs that a child is being bullied?

  • He seems overly frightened for no apparent reason
  • He wants to skip recess or avoid the playground
  • He doesn’t like going to school or misses school frequently
  • He always seems to lose money or other possessions
  • He does poorly in academics
  • He has bruises, cuts, or scrapes
  • He has damaged belongings (e.g. clothes, school bag, etc.) after coming home from school

Bullying is a terrible part of childhood. Thankfully, adults can make a difference. If parents, teachers, and caretakers are able to recognize the signs a child is being bullied or is a bully, they can correct the behavior.
