Caution Tape1 Why You Should Be Wary of SIDS Prevention ProductsInternet savvy parents scour the net for the best baby products in the market. Specifically, those that help reduce the risk of SIDS. But how can consumers be sure that a manufacturer’s claims are true?

Products such as blankets, mattresses and sleep positioners that say they can keep infants safe from SIDS are considered as medical devices. Medical devices, of course, are regulated by the US FDA.

However, according to the agency, they have not approved any product in the market that claims to lower the risk of SIDS. Therefore, any device that continues to advertise such claims are in violation of FDA regulations.

Also, medical experts have not yet found any correlation between the use of these devices and the decreased risk of SIDS. What’s worse is that the FDA has recorded several infant deaths related to the use of the so-called prevention products.

What you should take away from this:

1. Exercising caution is best especially when purchasing products that make certain claims.

2. Decreasing the risk SIDS does not cost a cent. There are guidelines on how to lower risk factors for SIDS. These are based on various research and studies, and have long been preached by health experts.

For more information, it’s best to consult your pediatrician.
