Parenting Tips: Make it to the Dinner Table Despite Your Busy Schedule. Here's How Green Eggs & Moms - Parenting Tips & News

From the archive. This post was first published on the original Green Eggs and Moms blog and is kept here as it was.

Dining TableDinner time is great way to connect with your kids. After all, eating is a social activity that encourages great conversations between family members. However, in today’s day and age, it’s tougher to gather everyone around the table because of busy schedules.

In some families both parents work. While it’s crucial to earn money for the family, it is also equally important to tend to the needs of kids. So, how do you and your spouse get around crazy work schedules?

On weekdays:

If you and your spouse can’t make it to the dinner table together, consider:

Creating a schedule and sticking to it. Sit down with your spouse and figure out which days he can cover and vice versa. Bring home work if you have to or clock in earlier on the days you are scheduled to dine with your children.

Calling for help. What do you do if  you have an office emergency during your scheduled dinner time? Ask relatives (grandparents, aunts or uncles) to come over and sit with the children instead. This will ensure that dinner conversations will continue even if you or your spouse aren’t around.

On weekends:

Just be there. The weekends are for family and recreation so make use of it. You can sneak in work but when meal time comes, have meaningful conversations with your kids at the table. You owe it to them.
