Teach Kids About Charity: Donate to Bagumbayan Elem. School (Manila)

From the archive. This post was first published on the original Green Eggs and Moms blog and is kept here as it was.

Christmas is just around the corner. This year, instead of worrying about what material gifts to give your children, why not opt for something intangible?

How about imparting the virtue of charity? It’s a lifelong gift that will always remain in your children’s heart.

Helping those in need

Bagumbayan Elementary School, located at Bagumbayan, Libis, Quezon City, is a public school with a noble goal: to have a SPED (Special Education) center that offers the best education to help children diagnosed with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and other disorders. Currently the newly formed center has 1 teacher and 5 students.

Due to budget constraints (a challenge faced by Philippine public schools), the SPED center lacks equipment, furniture and materials – all necessary for creating a conducive learning environment.

This is a call to all parents and non-parents alike. Use this holiday to teach your children about the gift of giving. Any donation (big or small) will help this center provide better education for children with special needs.

Do this with your kids, nieces or nephews and you will give them and yourselves, a very meaningful Christmas.

Below are some of the things needed:

  • Physical Development – rubber mats, wooden blocks, puzzles, pegboards and pegs
  • Language – phonetic flash cards and reading cards, alphabet cards and large movable alphabet, print alphabet, hard books (those with pages that cannot be easily torn)
  • Music/Art – coloring books, crayons, paint brushes, water-color, coloring pens and modeling clay / dough

Most of these items are inexpensive and can be purchased through great bargains. I used to see 3 wooden puzzle sets sold for Php 100.00 in malls.

Make this an activity with your children

Purchase the items with your children. Explain to them that donating these will help kids with special needs learn and cope better.

For busy families, you may also send cash donations or discuss special arrangements with us. For any questions please get in touch with me through these contact details: email, Twitter or Facebook.

This project was cooked up with the help of Casa De Bambini learning Center, which will be the drop-off area for the items. Their address and other contact details can be found by clicking on the link.

Donations will be accepted from December 16, 2011 to January 20, 2012.
